Summary

The Sexual Offences Act, 2012 consolidated and comprehensively reformed the law on sexual offences in Sierra Leone, strengthening protection against sexual violence and abuse, especially of women and children. It was a major advance in the country's response to sexual and gender-based violence.

The Act defines and criminalises a wide range of sexual offences — including rape, sexual assault, sexual penetration without consent, and offences against children and vulnerable persons — centring the law on the concept of consent. It sets the age of consent at eighteen, provides heavy penalties, and improves the treatment of complainants in the justice process. It was further strengthened by amendment in 2019, which increased penalties for sexual penetration of children.

It is a cornerstone of the protection of women and children and the fight against sexual violence.
