National Electricity Act, 2011
An Act restructuring the electricity supply industry in Sierra Leone and establishing the bodies responsible for generation, transmission and distribution.
Summary
The National Electricity Act, 2011 reformed the electricity supply industry in Sierra Leone. Together with the Sierra Leone Electricity and Water Regulatory Commission Act of the same year, it unbundled the former National Power Authority and established separate entities for different parts of the electricity supply chain.
The Act provides for the establishment and functions of the electricity-sector bodies — notably for generation and transmission and for distribution and supply — and for their governance and operations. It sets the framework for the generation, transmission, distribution and sale of electricity, the entry of independent power producers, and the development and expansion of electricity services. It operates alongside the independent regulator established in 2011.
It was amended by the National Electricity (Amendment) Act, 2018.
