Environment Agency Protection Act, 2008
An Act establishing the Environment Protection Agency of Sierra Leone and strengthening the framework for environmental protection and management.
Summary
The Environment Protection Agency Act, 2008 established the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) of Sierra Leone as the central body responsible for environmental protection and management, replacing the earlier arrangements under the Environment Protection Act, 2000.
The Act creates the Agency, provides for its governance and functions, and gives it responsibility for administering environmental law — including environmental impact assessment and licensing, pollution control, and the protection of natural resources. It provides for standards, monitoring and enforcement, and for offences and penalties for environmental harm.
It strengthened Sierra Leone's institutional framework for sustainable environmental management.
