Summary

The Crown Lands Ordinance, 1960 is the principal law governing Crown lands in Sierra Leone — land vested in the Crown and, since independence, in the State. It provides for the holding, management, grant and disposal of public land, largely in the Western Area.

The Ordinance regulates how the Government may lease, grant or otherwise dispose of public land, the terms on which such land is held, and the administration of the public estate. It remains part of the land-law framework and is read with the Constitution and later land legislation, with references to the Crown now read as references to the State.
